Keeping Your Pets Safe On The Road

To many of us with animals in the house – we love them like family. Caring for them also comes with a big price tag. Did you know that Americans spent over $50 billion on their pets in 2015! With that much of an investment being made, you might think people would be more inclined to protect their furry friends on the road. But it isn’t always the case.

So what should you be doing to protect you and your pets while driving?

Well first off, keep your pet restrained. You wouldn’t drive without a seatbelt, and neither should your pet. Free-range pets in your car present several dangers to drivers and other passengers. Feeding, petting, barking at the dog in the next car over, all can distract a driver from the road ahead and cause and accident. Also, if the pet isn’t restrained, it runs the risk of being injured in an accident. There are several pet restraints on the market that are relatively inexpensive and easy to use in your automobile. An animal carrier is also a good option for keeping Fido in place and safe.

Having an unrestrained animal in your car may also violate laws in your state. So be sure to check local laws.

It’s also a good idea to keep your pet inside your vehicle. As much as your dog may love to stick his head out the window, flying debris could seriously injure him. And if your truck is rolling, keep the dog out of the bed.

During the summer months, be sure to pack an extra water bottle for your pup, and never leave an animal in a hot car, it’s not cool.
