When To Change Your Windshield Wipers

You’re on the road, maybe headed to work and rain drops start to hit the windshield. You start up your windshield wipers and you suddenly remember; it’s past time to change your wiper blades. Instead of windshield wipers they have become windshield smearers. So when is the best time to change your windshield wipers?

A good rule of thumb for changing your windshield wipers is every six to twelve months. Weather conditions and the material used to in the wiper blades can determine the frequency you need to change them.

Windshield wipers are made of a few different materials including rubber, silicon and a blend of synthetic and rubber. The more inexpensive blades made of rubber work very well, but have a tendency to break down quicker than their synthetic counterpoints. Wiper blades are made of a thin, flexible material that will start to deteriorate with use.

Even if you don’t use your wipers that often, weather other than rain can impact the longevity of your wiper blades. Sun, heat and cold all contribute to wiper blades breaking down over time.

If you aren’t sure when to change wiper blades, your NAPA AutoCare mechanic will be glad to check your wipers when you are having regular service and recommend the best blade for your automobile. Replacing your blades in a timely manner can improve your visibility on the road and prevent damage to your windshield.
